Grover Oliver Lewter

It is with love and gratitude for a life well lived that we announce the passing of Grover Oliver Lewter, who passed away peacefully on July 25, 2026 at the age of 94. Born on June 5, 1932 in Chatham County, Grover was the beloved child of Dallas and Mae (Thompson) Lewter. Throughout a lifetime spanning many decades, he witnessed remarkable changes in the world while remaining a source of strength, wisdom, and compassion to family and friends. Grover was a devoted spouse, sibling, uncle and friend who found joy in his animals, especially his horses, Joe and Dan. He was also a dedicated husband to his wife, Peggie, who he adored. Grover proudly served his country in the United Stated Army during the Korean War from 1952 - 1953. He was deeply proud of his military service and his opportunity to serve his nation during a time of conflict. Grover will be remembered for his lifelong passion of woodworking. Even after retirement as the department head of the DOT carpentry shop on July 1,1994, he spent countless hours in his workshop, creating beautiful handcrafted pieces as well using his talents to help family, friends and neighbors. He was also very proud of receiving The Order Longleaf Pine award in 1994. He was also a faithful member of Good Hope Baptist Church serving in many roles over the years. Grover was preceded in death by his wife, Peggie Lewter, his parents Dallas and Mae (Thompson) Lewter, brother, Carlyle and other loved ones. He is lovingly survived by his cherished friend/caregiver, Sandy Blackwell, His niece Dawn Markam (Reid) great nephew, Anthony. Niece, Brenda Dail (Charles) great-great niece, Jennifer Dail, great-great nieces, Sara and Ava Blakely, sister in-law, Patricia Mitchell, niece, Lisa Fuller (Greg) and great niece, Paige Luck (Wes) and great-great nephews, Walker and Wade. Great niece, Cassidy Fuller and great nephew Brett Fuller, nephew, Nelson Mitchell (Heather). The family wishes to express heartfelt gratitude to Sandy for her wonderful compassion and care of Grover. The family will receive friends at Good Hope Baptist Church old sanctuary on Friday, July 31. Visitation will be from 10:00 am – 11:00 am, with the service at 11:00. Interment will be at Good Hope Baptist Church Cemetery. Flowers are welcome. Those considering memorial donations may be made in memory of Grover Lewter to Good Hope Baptist Church men’s class. Though Grover is no longer with us, the love, lessons, and memories shared over 94 remarkable years will remain in our hearts forever. He will be missed by all that knew him.
