Betty Griffin

Betty Hackney Griffin, 86, passed away peacefully on August 24, 2025. Born October 24, 1938, in Holly Springs, NC, to Carl T. and Bessie Hackney, Betty lived a life rooted in faith, family, and service. She was preceded in death by her husband, Braxton; her daughter, Elizabeth Ann; and her brother, Ray Ward. She is lovingly remembered by her brother Everett (Paulette) Hackney, her daughter, Denise (Mark) McMains, and her son, David (Erin) Griffin; six grandchildren—Elizabeth (Colin), Steven, Brian, Tyler, Sydney, and Mason; and three great-grandchildren—Lucy, Silas, and Braxton. Betty was devoted to her family and cherished the simple joys of life. She loved vacationing in the North Carolina mountains, listening to Elvis Presley, tending her abundant vegetable garden, and filling her home with the aroma of her homemade baked goods. A gifted cook and canner, she also collected cookbooks and passed along her love of food to future generations. Her professional life was one of extraordinary dedication. Betty served the State of North Carolina through the Department of Agriculture for more than 50 years, earning recognition from the Governor for her remarkable career. She especially loved the annual NC State Fair, where she supported her division faithfully. When not working at the fair booth, she could be found admiring the quilts, flowers, and livestock or enjoying a cone of her favorite NC State University ice cream. Over the years, Betty herself earned more than 30 ribbons at the fair for her award-winning pecan pie, fudge, peanut brittle, pound cake, and pickles. A woman of steadfast faith, Betty was a devoted member of her church and found her greatest joy in worship and fellowship. Sundays were her favorite day of the week—spent in the Lord’s house and surrounded by family and friends. Betty’s life was a beautiful reflection of love, kindness, and devotion. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her, but her legacy will live on in the family and community she loved so well. A visitation for family and friends will be held on Tuesday, September 2, at 9:30 a.m., followed by a funeral service at 10:30 a.m. at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Fuquay Varina.
